Danielle,
Tough time for local hikes with all of the park closures. Right now your best bet may be to hit the washes (Pantano, Tanque Verde, etc.) I think Sahuaro West is still open but I'm not familiar with the trails over there.

Thanks for the great and informative post. I am very familiar with leash laws as m husband is a park ranger. We are in tucsOn for a few weeks while my husband is doing some training and I am lOoking for some good hikes to take my hound on. Where are some of your favorite hikes that you take your dog? Thanks!

My dog loves hiking with me and *mostofthetime* listens. If there are other people or dogs though, I always snap his leash on just because I know I won't be able to stay in control of him.

another great thing for your dog to bring is a leash,as per a National Forest mandate that requires an owner to be in control of a domesticated animal AT ALL TIMES, as well as a Pima County Leash Law. (but some chose to ignore and break a law that doesnt seem convenient to them or their animal.)

Thanks. Dogs are great companions on the trail, but just like people not all of them belong on the trail. Temperament is really important. Saja is incredibly friendly. So friendly in fact that I'm not sure she would be suited for crowded trails. She'd have to see everyone, even people that don't like dogs. Just like every other aspect of hiking, a little courtesy and common sense would go a long way!

This is a really great post. I had some dog incidents (nothing serious - just upsetting) last week on the trail and I am writing a post about them right now from the other perspective - the victim rather than the owner. I will be sure to reference your article.
