I love maps. In a distinctly fanatical way. Always have, always will. I love road maps, trail maps, new maps, and old maps. Antique hand drawn maps make me feel all warm and fuzzy. It started when I was a kid and the Air Force only reinforced my obsession by making me a helicopter pilot. They paid me to pour over maps all day, to cut them, mark them, and study them. Even now I’d choose a map over a GPS any day.
So you can imagine my surprise and joy to learn that Tucson is home to one of the largest stores in the country dedicated to maps! Want topos, international atlases, touring guides, paper, or relief maps? Then you’ve got to check out Tucson’s Map and Flag Center (3239 N. 1st Street). Housed within this nondescript building is, without question, the best selection of maps I’ve seen in one store. Whether you are planning a three week road trip or an afternoon hike, the Map and Flag Center has got you covered.
This is a locally owned business, and, like all of us, they are feeling the effects of the economy, so before you spend your map money at the national chains why not check these guys out?
